Pat l'Irlandais

Pat l'Irlandais (Pat the Irish) is so named not only for his red hair, but also for his love of good food and good fun.

He had a rough start in life. He was born in September 2005 in a house of un-fixed cats. At first all was well but as the Christmas celebrations were approaching, the people decided kittens were too much work and on Christmas Eve they took the whole litter of kittens to the vet to be killed.

The vet took the litter but refused to kill them. He called the Animal Rescue Network to see if someone was willing to take the kittens home for foster, and thankfully someone could. Everyone was fixed and then sent to their new foster home.

But after a few months, as the kittens got older and bigger and started running around more and all, there were complains from neighbours and the lady had to get rid of the kittens as soon as possible. Hopefully another foster mom working for the shelter could take them in, and so everyone once again changed home.

You have to keep in mind that cats are habit creatures. There is not much more traumatic to a cat than a move, if not a total change of family AND home.

Pat being a nervous cat to start with, got very sick with diarrhea.

Pat's sisters found homes, and some of his foster brothers too, but Pat stayed. His foster mom would take him to Adoption Days in pet stores but he was so nervous on those days that he wasn't very interesting to people.

Meanwhile I was carressing the project of adopting a third cat. I had recently started this website and was exchanging with the Animal Rescue Network a lot, trying to prove myself to them and help them as much as I could. I had browsed their PetFinder page a lot, as well as their own Adoption page, and had spotted Pat as a potencial third cat, but I wasn't sure...

Then one day I heard there was an Adoption Day organized close to my home, and saw that as a very good opportunity to meet people from the ARN while proving my interest. And so I went for a visit... And so I met Pat in person... And so I fell in love.

Ben convinced our landlord to allow us a third cat and we were ready...

But I had a lot of expenses coming up this summer and summer is a very stressful time for Ronron because of the roaming un-fixed cats bothering her in our windows and last summer she started marking and it was very stressful for all involved so I wasn't sure bringing a new cat to the family during this time was a good idea and I was planning a vacation, 4 days camping, in August, and was it wise to have a new cat and then leave, and everything...

But Pat's foster mom convinced me. And since June 14th Pat has been in my home. I was officially fostering him. This gave me some time to gather the money for his adoption fee. It was also a trial period, to see how it goes managing the expense of a third cat.

On September 24th 2006, finally his previous foster mom visited us and the papers were signed, and the fee was paid.

Though he spent his first days under the bed, and though he still sometimes runs away from me and won't really be a lap cat or anything, Pat is a lovely kitty. He will roll and flirt at your feet, and has the loudest purr you've ever heard. His meow is the tinest and cutest little squeek and it cracks me up as Ronron has a very loud and powerful meow. Pat will also try to rub on and headbutt his sisters who, up to this day, haven't been very keen to this idea. Pat is pretty nervous but very social and very playful. Everyone loves him.

He is my little King of Charms and I'm very happy he is now part of this family.
